What are proverbs? Where do they come from? Why do some sayings survive for centuries while others disappear?
This free public workshop, hosted at Hull History Centre by the Shakespeare and Early Modern Proverbial Culture project, invites you to explore the rich world of proverbs, sayings and commonplaces, from the language of Shakespeare’s plays to the expressions we still use today.
Following the lunchtime talk by project researchers Mel Evans and Richard Meek (12.30-1.30pm), workshop participants will be provided with lunch before taking part in an interactive afternoon session beginning at 2pm. The workshop will feature four activity zones, each offering a different way to discover how proverbs have shaped everyday speech, literature, and culture across the centuries.
Whether you’re interested in language, local history, literature, or simply curious about the sayings we live by, this event offers a fun and engaging opportunity to explore the enduring power of proverbial wisdom.
The lunchtime lecture is open to all. Places for lunch and the afternoon workshop can be reserved when registering for the event here. No previous knowledge of Shakespeare or early modern literature is required, and all are warmly welcome.
